Una joya o alhaja es un objeto ornamental usado para adornar o embellecer el cuerpo. La palabra joya deriva del francés antiguo «jouel», proveniente del latín «jocale», que se traduce como juguete o chuchería, mientras que su sinónimo alhaja proviene del árabe andalusí «الحَاجَ» (alḥáŷa, «cosa valiosa»), y este a su vez derivado del árabe clásico «حَاجَة» (ḥāŷah, «necesidad») o حِلْيَة (ḥilyah, «ornamento»). Generalmente una joya se fabrica con piedras y metales preciosos, aunque también se pueden emplear otros materiales para fabricar joyas, como por ejemplo papel de revistas endurecido o joyas de plástico recuperado del océano, entre otras innovaciones en bisutería.
