Se denomina bisutería a la industria que produce objetos o materiales de adorno que no están hechos de materiales preciosos, en cuyo caso se llama joyería. Proviene de la palabra francesa bijouterie. El concepto bisutería es sumamente amplio y abarca una serie de ornamentos contemporáneos que incluyen todo tipo de accesorios relacionados con la moda, como por ejemplo pulseras, tobilleras ya sean de hilo o metal, collares, anillos, pendientes, pañueleria, vinchas, carteras y bolsos, anteojos no recetados para sol y un sinfín de artículos más, teniendo esta palabra una alta gama de amplitud. Por tal motivo los creadores de bisutería trabajan arduamente para que este mercado no se agote y poder ofrecer un alto nivel de competitividad y trabajo formal destinado a la estética.
Materiales
La bisutería se fabrica con materiales muy diversos: la porcelana, alambre de latón, telas, pasta de papel, pasta de vidrio, esmaltes, perlas cultivadas, etc. Si bien la bisutería artesanal se diseña y crea con la pretensión de otorgar valor a los materiales que se usan por sí mismos, una parte importante de ella se fabrica con el objetivo de recubrirla de metal precioso, como el oro, la plata, o el rodio. Si la calidad del recubrimiento de un adorno de bisutería fina es buena, puede ser prácticamente indistinguible de una joya. La densidad es una característica que puede permitir distinguir una imitación de una pieza de joyería, ya que los metales preciosos son muy densos, y por tanto las piezas que se elaboran con ellos son, para su tamaño, bastante pesadas.
En cadenas y colgantes se suele usar el latón chapado con capas de oro de entre 1 a 5 micras de grosor para evitar la formación de eccemas o alteraciones epidérmicas provocadas por reacciones de tipo alérgico.
